Generation Blue & Green: A Legacy That Lives On

July 09, 2026 130 Views

This week marks 30 years since one of the proudest moments in the history of our club, when our senior footballers lifted the Dublin Senior Championship title in 1996 (July 6th).

While three decades have passed, this is not a story about the passage of time. It is a story about dedication, commitment and the legacy left by a remarkable group of players who wore the blue and green with immense pride.

That team represented everything a club strives to be. Friends, teammates and volunteers who committed countless hours to each other and to St Sylvester's. Their success wasn't built in a single season, but over years of hard work, sacrifice and belief.

Their triumph earned them a run to the Leinster Club Championship Final, taking the name of St Sylvester's beyond Dublin and creating memories that remain part of our club's history today.

But perhaps the greatest legacy of that team isn't found in medals or match programmes.

It lives on every time our senior footballers take to the field.

Today, familiar surnames are involved at various levels; Guiden, Barnes, Keogh, Roche, Meehan, Troy and others are proudly represented by a new generation wearing the same jersey their fathers wore with such distinction. Different players. Different era. The same club colours. The same pride.

That continuity is what makes a club special. Success can never be measured solely in trophies. It is measured by generations who choose to come back, to represent their community and to inspire those who follow.

As club championship season gets underway this weekend, beginning with our hurlers, we take a moment to recognise the men of 1996. Their achievement deserves to be remembered not simply because it came 30 years ago, but because it remains part of the story, identity and ambition of the club we are today.

To every player, manager, coach, selector and volunteer who played their part in that memorable season, thank you. Your contribution remains an important chapter in the St. Sylvester's story.

And to the current generation who now carry those famous family names onto the field each weekend, you are writing the next chapter.

The story continues.
