U14 Hurling Team Compete at Féile

The U14 team competed at the annual Féile na nGael tournament on Saturday 21st April. We were drawn in a group that included Good Counsel, O’Tooles and host club Skerries Harps. The great weather and sunshine on the day contributed to a great occasion.

After meeting early in Bridgefield for a team photo we set-off for Skerries. After a short welcome to all teams in front of Skerries club-house and playing of Amhrán na bhFiann we prepared for our 1st match against Good Counsel on the main pitch.

This was a tight match with Good Counsel up by a point at half time. Although we played some fine hurling and had a number of goal chances in the second half we couldn’t quite get the scores we needed and Good Counsel won with final score Sylvester’s 1-6 Good Counsel 1-10.

Our next opponents were Skerries who had won their first match and this match played over in Townparks. This was another low scoring close match in which we battled hard against a very strong Skerries team. Skerries were ahead by a couple of points before they got a decisive goal in the 2nd half which put them well ahead and we never managed to close the gap. Final score Sylvester’s 1-3 Skerries 1-11.

The mood was low in the camp now as we felt that we were out however news came through of the other match in which O’Tooles won against Good Counsel. This meant that there was a slim chance we could still make it into the semi-finals but we needed to win our last match.

So on to the last series of matches and our last group match against O’Tooles. We knew we had to dig deep and win this match by a big score and the players responded with a great performance to win. We were on top for all of the match and played some fine hurling. Final score Sylvester’s 7-13 O’Tooles 0-2.

Our work done we now needed to wait for the result of the other match. After a few minutes word came through that Skerries had beaten Good Counsel which meant that Skerries topped the group on 6 points with Sylvester’s, O’Tooles and Good Counsel all on equal 2 points. After a few anxious minutes it was confirmed that Sylvester’s has finished runner up in the group on points difference and were through to the semi-finals with a match against Commercials in Naomh Mearnog.

So on to Portmarnock and although a few players had injuries and our first-aid bag was depleted of all ice-packs we were still determines to give of our best in the semi-final vs Commercials. After a difficult first half for us Commercials were well on top and played some great hurling. However our lads never gave up and came back strongly in the second half to create some fine scores and battled to the end. Final score Sylvester’s 4-3 Commercials 6-12.

A big thank you to our host club Skerries who looked after us on the day with plenty of sandwiches and tea and to the parents and supporters who travelled to Skerries for group matches and to Naomh Mearnog for the semi-final. The support was great.

And finally a big thank you to all of the players (some of them eligible to play Féile next year) who played great hurling and never gave up. They battled right to the end and were a credit to themselves on and off the pitch and to the Sylvester’s jersey.
