Hurlers tough it out against Barrog

St Sylvesters 1-11 Naomh Barrog 2-6 By Cilian Murphy AHL3 St Sylvesters produced a thoroughly efficient second half performance to see off a dogged Naomh Barrog side in this AHL3 clash at Broomfield yesterday afternoon. With both sides unbeaten going into this game, there was plenty at stake with the intensity of both teams’ performances illustrating this clearly from the off.

Barrog came steaming out of the traps early on with a Dermot O Donnell point on three minutes quickly followed by a Niall Connolly free a minute later.

Syls’ forwards were seeing plenty of the ball but they started nervously with three poor enough wides. Their nerves were settled on seven minutes, however, when full forward David Casey struck over a free from in front of the posts from about 40 yards out.

Barrog hit back almost immediately when wing back Aidan Kirwan launched a huge free from his own half into the Syls full back line and the ball bounced off a defender’s hand and into the net.

Syls would have had a goal of their own minutes later through corner forward Fionn Carney only for Adam McGrane to pull off an excellent save in the Barrog nets.

Niall Ring, Naomh Barrog’s centre back, was sweeping excellently in front of his full back line, snuffing out any danger around him and he was the Kilbarrack side’s leader throughout.

Barrog tagged on another point through Connolly (free) and looked as though they were in cruise control until Syls hit back with a goal of their own.

Full forward Casey found himself in space on the right touchline and, instead of having a shot himself, switched the play excellently to find Carney and he finished low to the keeper’s right.

This was the lift that the home side needed and they added to their tally shortly after with scores from Casey (free) and a superb strike from midfielder Cillian O Flynn from all of 60 yards.
