The newest clubhouse updates had a soft unveiling last evening and everyone present were delighted with the layout and quality of our new club bar, it is modern, cosy and accessible directly from the street. Come down and see for yourself, I think you will love it. Big thanks to a club member who helped with the finance and great credit to all the people who volunteered their time and skills - plumbing, carpentry (beautiful work), electrics, sound system, painting and a whole lot more. Hopefully Joe will send me a note and name names, it is a great team effort, Bualla Bos agus Syls Abú.

Hurling Helmets

I have been requested by Central Council to remind all players, and at all levels, that in all Hurling Games and Hurling Practice Sessions it is mandatory for, and the responsibility of, each individual player to wear a helmet with a facial guard that meets the standards set out in IS:335 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI). All players are advised that in the event of a head injury occurring, if the helmet being worn does not meet the standard or is modified or altered from the original manufactured state, they are not covered under the terms of the GAA Player Injury Fund. Congrats to Dublin and Clare Camogie

I was delighted to see the girls stand their ground and not accept a coin toss to decide All Ireland qualification. Our games are played on the field and fair play to the camogie people who stood up for that simple principle.

Death of 'Grandad Liam' O'Brien RIP

The Players, mentors and families of all involved in the U14 teams wish to express their condolences to Helen, Conor and the O’Brien family on the passing of Liam. ‘Granddad Liam’, as he was known to all the players, had been a constant fixture at our matches and training sessions since we started out in the Nursery up until his recent illness. He was a quiet, supportive presence on the sideline, always available to give lifts (and stop in McDonalds on the way back), always encouraging and saying well done. He took huge pride is seeing the lads grow and mature, he celebrated wins and losses with dignity and a team photo took pride of place in his living room. He will be greatly missed by all. Ernie

USA J1 Sanctions

Dear Secretary, I refer to J1 Sanctions etc for playing in USA during the summer. The rule [Rule 6.11 (v)] states that a player who has received a Sanction shall not be eligible to play again with his Club in Ireland for the 30 days after the date of approval of his Sanction in Croke Park…….. Following the tragic events in Berkeley, California, I have received some calls enquiring if a sanction could be revoked as a number of players were considering returning to Ireland immediately as they were, understandably, very distressed from the incident.

Berkeley tragedy touches all of us

The Syls community would like to express our sadness and extend our sympathy to the victims, families and friends of the awful tragedy in Berkeley this week. We know many of our members have connections through sport and college with those affected and we have many members on J1s in the US at the moment so we know this touches all of us. There was a minutes silence at the games in Broomfiled last evening as a mark of support and respect. I was a member of the Bay Area Community for a long time and thank them for their efforts for our young people.

Fergus Byrne . . .at your service

Fergus Byrne . . .at your service

I picked up a couple of pictures of Fergus striding gracefully ( I suggested Chariots of Fire for the music but Fergus says he would prefer Bay Watch, I bet you would) across the field last evening on another mission to administer first aid to a wounded Syls warrior. I got to wondering how many times have we seen Fergus over the years in similar action, Senior Football, Senior Hurling, Feile Final recently, loads of teams, a lot of his spare time dedicated to health and well being of our players. Fergus is also behind the Defibrillator Program at Syls (one on Broomfield, one at Church Rd thanks to Niall O'Donnellan) which might prove vital for any one of us one day and he also runs First Aid courses. So thanks to Fergus, one of our best team players, and, by the way, you are still showing great form.

Performance under pressure in sport

Performance under pressure in sport

We had a special mentors presentation on Thursday evening with a good attendance on performance under pressure. Martin Fairn, www.gazing.com, a professional rugby player and advisor to many top class athletes and sportsmen held a very engaging session with many insights into how to prepare mentally for events, how to recognise what we can control, what we might influence and what we cannot control. Special thanks to Martin and to the juvenile committee members, MIck Dowling, Paddy, Fergal and Liam Brennan and especially Jenny Keogh and Gina Lillis. who prepared the hall so nicely.

Niall O'Donnellon presented a new AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) to Ciaran Meehan last evening in memory of his wife Jean. Tributes to Dave Billings

I see where Dave Billings has passed away. I was only chatting to him in Broomfield on Saturday evening he cycled out to watch the senior game, I was pucking on the same pitch and he stopped to chat and asked was I still playing away. He was even captured in one of the photos above the right shoulder of No 2. Always said hello, RIP. Hilary Murray-Hession

Dave Billings RIP - one of the great Dubs

Dublin GAA is shocked to hear the sudden passing of Dave Billings, St Vincents and Dublin stalwart of many years. As recently as last Saturday he was in Broomfield at our senior football game and we exchanged the usual pleasentaries - he had a dig at Pat and Dan (I stayed out of his range) as he cycled by. Anybody who ever kicked or pucked a ball in Dublin will have a fond memory of Dave Billings and we are much the poorer for his passing. The lads at St Sylvesters would like to pay our condolences to Dave's family and friends, he was a great character.
